Shopping doesn't have to cost the earth
With electricshopping.ie you can not only lower the cost of the products you
buy, but you can also reduce your carbon footprint into the bargain. That's
because we now have a special agreement with our friends at Climate Care.
We now give you the option to 'offset' the cost of greenhouse gas emissions
produced in the delivery, use and manufacture of your item, by reducing
an equivalent amount of CO2 on your behalf. These reductions are made through a
range of projects in renewable energy and energy efficiency, which not only
fight climate change but bring benefits to communities round the world. To find
out more about these projects just click here.
How much carbon does my purchase produce?
Whether it is boiling the kettle for a cuppa or giving your vacuum cleaner a spin, the energy
most items need to work, creates emissions that contribute to climate change.
The problem doesn't stop there, the manufacture and shipping of most products
also gives off green house gasses, like C02. You can see how these
three areas, the use, delivery and manufacture of most products, increases a
households 'Carbon Footprint'.
So, just how much carbon will your purchase generate? Here's a rough guide to
illustrate the amount of carbon created by some everyday items.
| Product |
Carbon Produced in 1 Year |
| Fast Boil Kettle |
36 Kilograms |
| Air Conditioner |
228 Kilograms |
| Electric Heater |
348 Kilograms |
| Delivery of your item by Courier |
2.5 Kilograms |
| See below for how this was calculated |
From these figures, you can see how your carbon footprint quickly adds up. By making a
small contribution as you check out, you can help to offset these emissions and
help Climate Care projects worldwide.
What's electricshopping.ie doing to reduce their carbon emissions?
As well as asking for your help to offset carbon emissions, we are doing our bit
too. We have always tried to reuse all packaging wherever possible; we get
thousands of boxes from our suppliers, so we use them again to send you your
order. But now, we pledge to offset all of our staff's flights and we aim for
all new company cars to be low emissions vehicles, such as hybrid cars. As well
as this, we now run regular organisation-wide energy audits to ensure that our
use of energy is as efficient as possible, from changing to low voltage lighting
to buying more energy-efficient web servers.
The great benefit to us in saving energy is the reduction in our bills, which
means our customers make an even bigger saving on our great range of products.
In the end, we all benefit.
How do I get involved?
All you have to do is make a £1, £2, £2.50, £3 or £5 contribution at the
checkout and all the money goes directly towards projects that will offset the
impact of the delivery, use and manufacture of your item. That's all you have to
do, we'll do the rest.
electricshopping.ie - When it's this easy, why not?
How carbon emissions were calculated: Fast Boil Kettle: Two boils per day at two minutes
each boil, power rating of 3Kw gives 36 KwH per year. Air Conditioner: Switched
on for five hours per day, five days a week for two months. Power rating of
2.5Kw gives 500KwH per year. Electric Heater (Standard oil filled): Switched on
for five hours per day, five days per week for four months. Power rating of 2Kw
gives 800 KwH per year. Delivery: Please note this is a very rough estimate.
Distance Item has travelled 100 Miles in a Diesel van. Amount adjusted to
take into account other items on van too. The calculations have been based on
the internationally agreed GHG Protocol Initiative Scale with carbon emissions
based on data typical for the United Kingdom. The figures are intended as an
illustration only and actual consumption and emissions will very widely.
